Electromagnetic Locating — Bahrain & Saudi Arabia
EML Survey Services in Bahrain & Saudi Arabia
RIIM's EML (Electromagnetic Locating) surveys trace buried metallic pipes and cables across Bahrain and Saudi Arabia — using active signal application and passive detection to map utility routes, measure depths, and identify conflicts before excavation.
What RIIM Delivers in Manama
Electromagnetic locating (EML) is the fastest and most cost-effective method for tracing metallic buried utilities — particularly in urban areas where utility density is high and excavation risk is greatest. RIIM's EML surveys are typically combined with GPR to provide comprehensive coverage of both metallic and non-metallic buried services, delivering the complete utility picture required for PAS-128 and ASCE 38-22 compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is EML survey and how does it work?
EML (Electromagnetic Locating) survey uses a transmitter to apply a signal to a buried metallic utility — either by direct connection to an access point or by inductive coupling above the ground. A receiver detects the electromagnetic field emitted by the energised utility, allowing the operator to trace its route and measure its depth. Passive EML detects the fields emitted by live power cables and active metallic utilities without applying a signal.
What types of utilities can EML detect?
EML detects metallic utilities including steel and cast iron water mains, gas pipes, copper and aluminium power cables, telecoms cables, and metallic drainage pipes. EML cannot detect non-metallic utilities such as HDPE pipes, PVC ducts, or concrete pipes — GPR is required for these. RIIM combines EML and GPR for comprehensive utility detection.
Is EML survey the same as EPL survey?
Yes. EML (Electromagnetic Locating) and EPL (Electromagnetic Pipe and Cable Locating) refer to the same survey method. RIIM uses both terms — EPL is the PAS-128 standard terminology, while EML is commonly used in the GCC and Saudi Arabia. The survey method and equipment are identical.
How accurate is EML survey for pipe and cable depth measurement?
EML depth measurement accuracy is typically within 10 to 15% of the true depth for a single isolated utility in favourable conditions. Accuracy decreases in areas of high utility density where signals from adjacent utilities interfere. RIIM's operators are trained to identify and account for signal interference, and depth measurements are documented with confidence levels in the survey report.
