Electromagnetic Pipe & Cable Locating (EPL)

Trace live utilities with precision — even in congested corridors.

Overview

Electromagnetic Pipe and Cable Locating is the most effective method for tracing metallic utilities and cables that carry an electrical signal. RIIM's EPL surveys complement GPR by targeting conductive utilities — gas mains, water mains, power cables, and telecoms — with high positional accuracy.

How It Works

EPL systems work by inducing an electromagnetic signal onto a target utility (either directly or via induction) and then tracing the resulting field at the surface. This allows our engineers to follow the route of individual utilities through complex, congested underground environments where GPR alone may not distinguish between closely spaced assets.

Applications

  • Live utility tracing in congested urban corridors
  • Gas main and water main route verification
  • Power cable and telecoms duct tracing
  • Depth profiling of metallic utilities
  • Verification of as-built utility records
  • Pre-excavation safety surveys

Deliverables

  • Georeferenced utility route drawings
  • Depth and signal strength logs
  • Combined GPR + EPL integrated utility plans
  • PAS-128 / ASCE 38-22 compliant survey reports
